Owndom docs
Owndom is an AI workspace: chat with AI agents, hand them bigger jobs, make images and designs, and talk with people in Messages. This guide covers everything you can do with an account.
Getting started
- Sign up with your name, email, a password of 8 or more characters and your month and year of birth. You must be 13 or older; if you are 13 to 17, a parent or guardian must agree to the Terms of use for you. AI chat, agents and the studios are for 18 and older; from 13 you can use Messages and friends. Tick to agree to the Terms and the Privacy policy. Have an invite code? Enter it here.
- Confirm your email. Open the link we send you; it works once and expires after 48 hours. Didn't get it? Use Send the email again.
- Start as a guest. Once you confirm, you can chat with your own model and use Messages. The rest (the studios, files, tasks and missions) opens when your account is approved; with an invite, right away. A guest waiting for approval is kept; accounts never confirmed, or turned down, are deleted after 30 days.
Forgot your password? Use Forgot password? on the sign-in page: we email you a link to choose a new one (it works once, for an hour).
The sidebar lists everything you can use: Workspace (Home, Chat, Messages, Your profile, Phone, Tasks) and Intelligence (Agents, Missions, Sessions, Skills, Memory, Agent Mail, Design Studio, Image Studio). Your profile is also under your name at the bottom left, with Appearance and Help & documentation (this guide, inside the app, with a checklist to get started).
Chat and models
Open Chat and type. Your agent answers, and can use tools along the way: you see each step as it happens.
- Your own model. Chats run on your own API key from an AI company (Claude, GPT, Gemini and others). Add it under Your profile → Plan & models; it is checked with the company, stored encrypted, shown only as its last 4 characters and used only for your chats. You pay the company directly; some offer free keys. The model menu then lists that company's models; switch at any time.
- A model on your computer: run a model on your own PC with Ollama, LM Studio, llama.cpp, Jan, vLLM or
LocalAI, then open the model menu in a chat: Owndom finds it by itself and lists its models under Your
computer. Pick one and chat. Your browser talks to it directly; the chat is kept in Owndom like any other.
Ollama needs
OLLAMA_ORIGINSset to this site and LM Studio needs CORS turned on: the menu says how. - Providers you can add a key for: Anthropic, OpenAI, Google, xAI, Mistral, DeepSeek, Qwen (Alibaba Cloud), Kimi (Moonshot), Z.ai, Groq, Cerebras, NVIDIA, Together, Fireworks and OpenRouter. DeepSeek, Kimi, Qwen and Z.ai are based in China; chats you send to their models are processed there. See the Privacy policy.
- If your model isn't answering, the chat tells you; it never switches to another model on its own, unless you switch on Carry on with another of my free keys under Plan & models.
- Attach files by uploading, pasting or dragging them in. Type @ to mention one of your files, and / for commands.
- Stop a reply from any device, or add to a reply while it's still working. A reply keeps going if you close the page.
- Voice: use the microphone to talk, have replies read aloud, or turn on hands-free conversation.
Agents and modes
Two agents are built in: Build does the work, and Plan looks around and proposes a plan without changing anything. Each chat also has a mode:
- Plan: read-only; nothing is changed.
- Build: edits your files and uses tools; risky steps ask you first.
- Auto: keeps going on safe steps and asks you about risky ones.
- Bypass: runs without confirmations, except for steps that always need your OK.
When an agent needs your OK, a card appears in the chat with Allow and Deny.
What agents can do for you: search the web and open pages; read, write and search files in your own space; run code in an isolated sandbox (Python, JavaScript or Bash, with no internet access, in short runs); make images and designs; keep to-dos and tasks; send things to your phone; and start helpers that work in parallel (up to 6 at once) or hand the job to another agent.
Make your own under Intelligence → Agents: give an agent instructions, a mode, a model and the tools it may use, and set rules it must follow: things it should always or never do, tools it may not use, and steps that need your OK. Rules for all agents apply to every agent you use.
Agent Mail holds the messages your agents send each other while they work.
Missions
For work that takes more than one answer. Start one from Intelligence → Missions, or type /goal, /team or /swarm in a chat.
- Goal: an agent keeps working until the job is done and checked, within the budget you choose (3, 5 or 10 rounds). If it runs out, Keep going gives it more.
- Team: the job is split across agents that work in parallel.
- Swarm: several agents answer and their answers are combined into the best one.
- Option: Plan only (nothing is changed). Missions run on your own model, like your chats.
- Watch the work live and approve risky steps right on the mission's card.
- Any message in a Messages space can become a goal or a team mission.
Skills and memory
Skills are step-by-step procedures an agent follows when a task matches, such as a review checklist. You can use the skills shared with members from Intelligence → Skills, or with Use in a chat.
Memory holds what the AI remembers about you and your work, and it checks it before answering. On Intelligence → Memory you can search it, add to it, edit it or make it forget something. Other members never see your memory. Passwords, keys and tokens the AI recognises are removed before anything is saved.
Messages and friends
Messages is group chat, voice and direct messages, with AI agents you can call in.
- Spaces are private: only the people you invite can read them. Create text and voice channels, invite people with a code, and give members the owner, admin or moderator role.
- Reply, react, share files (up to 25 MB), format with markdown, and edit or delete your own messages. Unread counts show what's new.
- Catch me up gives you a short private summary of what you missed.
- Add an agent to a space and anyone can type @name with a question. In a channel the agent answers and can search the web; for anything more, open a chat with it.
- Direct messages are one-to-one conversations with friends.
Friends (in Your profile) is where you find others on Owndom. Your profile has an @handle, name, picture, bio, status and colour. Add friends, accept requests or block someone. On Your profile you choose who sees your profile (everyone or friends) and your online status (everyone, friends or nobody).
Image Studio
Intelligence → Image Studio makes pictures from a description, on your own image model: add an OpenAI, xAI or Together key under Your profile → Plan & models (you pay that company for the images).
- Describe what you want and press Make; two images can be on the way at once.
- To change an image you add, use an OpenAI key; xAI and Together make new images only.
- You can also ask for an image in a chat.
- No nudity or sexual content. Requests involving minors, or turning photos of real people into intimate images, are refused and logged. See the Terms of use.
Design Studio
Intelligence → Design Studio makes web pages, app screens, dashboards, logos, social posts and slides from a description, on one of your own keys.
- Ask for changes in plain words; every version is kept, and you can go back to any of them.
- Your designs are private unless you share one to the library.
- Designs in the library can be a starting point; what you make from them must be your own.
Your files
Files you upload and files your agents make live in your own private space; other members can't open them. Your images are in Image Studio and your designs in Design Studio.
- Download all of your files at once under Your profile → Your data → Download my files.
- Snapshots let you undo changes your agents made to your files.
- Tasks is your own to-do list, which your agents can add to.
Your phone
- Install Owndom on iPhone or iPad from Safari (Share → Add to Home Screen) or on Android from Chrome (⋮ → Install app). See Download for the steps.
- Notifications: turn them on under Your profile → Notifications. You're told when a reply is ready, a goal finishes or gets stuck, a friend writes, or an agent needs your OK; on Android and desktop you can approve or deny right from the notification. They're sent only while you're away from Owndom.
- Use this phone (the Phone page) lets your agents send it links and notes, and ask for your location or a photo, which you share with a tap. You can also share your battery level and location continuously (the latest only, never a history). Turning sharing off or removing the phone deletes what was shared. Phones never run commands.
Your profile and data
Open Your profile from the sidebar or from your name at the bottom left. It has these sections:
- Profile: your name, picture, handle, bio, status and colour, and who sees your profile and online status.
- Friends: your friends and who is online, friend requests, everyone here, and people you blocked.
- Appearance: dark, light or System (follows your computer or phone), the style, any accent colour, a background colour or picture (with dim, blur and see-through panels), corners, font, text size, density and motion. It is saved on that device; the menu under your name has a quick version.
- Plan & models: free, or subscribe (paid through Stripe) to keep your chats and files privately; manage or cancel the subscription here. Your own API keys are here too.
- Sign-in & security: change your password (other devices are signed out), see where you're signed in, sign out of one device or everywhere.
- Notifications: turn phone notifications on for each device.
- Your status: Automatic shows you as online while you use Owndom and away when you step away or hide it; or choose Away, Do not disturb or Invisible (under your name).
- Your data: download a copy of your data (account, profile, agreements and chats), download all your files, or delete your account and everything in it by typing your email to confirm.
- Delete a chat from your chat list: it is deleted for good, with its messages (and its training copy).
How long we keep things: on the free plan, chats are deleted 30 days after you last use them (older chats:
about 6 months), files after about 6 months unused; if you are 18 or older, what you write (and the AI's replies
when the model's maker allows it) is copied in the meantime as training data for Owndom's own model, with common
personal details filtered out (never exchanges where your agent used a tool). Subscribers keep their chats and files
until they delete them, never used for training unless they choose to share. Under Your profile → Plan &
models → Help improve Owndom you choose how much to share, and the send button under a reply (or
/share) sends one chat to the owner.
A guest waiting for approval is kept; accounts never confirmed, or turned down, are deleted after 30 days. Logs are
kept for 90 days, and backups for up to 16 days. We never sell your data. The full
details are in the Privacy policy; questions go to [email protected].
Safety
- Your agents ask before risky steps, and you can deny any of them.
- Every account is kept apart: other members can't see your chats, files or memory.
- Code your agents run goes into an isolated sandbox with no internet access.
- Replies and missions have fair-use limits, so no one can tie up the service.
- What's not allowed is in the Terms of use.
For developers
Owndom has an HTTPS and JSON API. API keys are issued by Owndom's administrator; see Developers for how the API works.
What's new
The highlights of each release are on What's new. Owndom is independent; the hardware fund helps pay for the machines it runs on.
